Standing within an archway of a cloister, Dominic of Bologna, nimbed, tonsured, and wearing a habit, holds an open book in his right hand and a cross-staff in his left hand. A dog holding a candle in its mouth lies at his feet (Domini Canes). In the distance, a monk stands inside a cloister.
The scene is framed by a border decorated with foliate and floreate ornament, including viola, and inhabited by a butterfly.
