Notes
Watermark: ARCHES.
In 1884 Pissarro wrote to his son Lucien, then living in London, about his move to Éragny, a suburb northwest of Paris: "The house is wonderful and not too dear; a thousand francs with garden and field. ... But here comes spring, the fields are green, outlines are delicate in the distance." In this sheet, the artist captured that landscape in a quick pencil sketch and added touches of watercolor, juxtaposing gradations of the same color and complementary colors in a manner similar to the pointillist technique developed by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. -- Exhibition Label, from "Drawn to Greatness: Master Drawings from the Thaw Collection"
