8 15/16 x 7 1/8 inches (227 x 181 mm)
Black, red, and white chalk on gray paper.

Notes
Watermark: fragmentary.
Acquired as by Antoine Coypel, this study of a girl demonstrates the appeal of using a combination of red, black, and white chalk on a medium ground for portrait studies. The use of colored chalks and pastels for such studies became more frequent in France and in the North during the second half of the seventeenth century and this sheet may be the work of a northern artist.
