Berman was commissioned in 1939 by Colonel de Basil's (1880-1951) company Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo to design scenes for its production of La Symphonie Italienne. The ballet, which was never produced, was written by David Lichine (1910-1972) with music by Mendelssohn.
