Brush and off-white and light brown oil, and pen and brown ink; on a paper prepared with a brown ground of lead white tinted with yellow-brown ochre and a little red in oil medium.

Inscriptions/Markings
Inscribed on the album page below the design, in brown ink, "Cúnctos mors úna manet (title)/ Pallida mors aeqúo púlsat pede paúperum tabernas/ Regúmque túrres" (Pale death with foot impartial knocks at the poor man's cottage and at princes' palaces). The text is from Horace, "Odes", Book I, 4, lines 13-14.
