Pen and brush, black ink and wash, on paper; outlines of the figure of the woman in the foreground on the right (bending towards the cart) incised with a stylus; framing line in black ink; verso: a large area of rubbed black chalk corresponding with the female figure indented on the recto.

Inscriptions/Markings
Inscribed on the verso, in graphite, at center, "299" [corrected to "289"]; and below this, at center right, "The Dutch Hawker; Paulus / Joachim / Uytewael / 1560-1640".
Watermark: Eagle with a crozier, cross and three circles below (similar to Briquet, no. 1370: Utrecht, 1599), fragment, lower half.
