Notes:

One of the many drawings by Antonio Guardi that copy the works of other Venetian masters, this is a study after Giambattista Tiepolo's Education of the Virgin altarpiece of 1732 in S. Maria della Fava, Venice. For recent discussions of Guardi's copies, see William Barcham, “The Issue of Copies: Three Drawings by Giannantonio Guardi in New York,” Artibus et Historiae 83 (2021), and Denis Ton, ed., Antonio Guardi: I Fasti Veneziani (Venice & Turin, 2023).

Inscription:

Inscribed in pen and brown ink, at lower left, by “the reliable Venetian hand”: [da] Gianbatista Tiepolo Veneziano.

Brackley, Norfolk; Ann Thomas, New York; by whom given to Donald Tapley (1927-1999), New York, by 1963; his widow, Caroline Rosalie Tapley (1934-2020); Kate Tapley.
