Nicolas Party has achieved international recognition for his paintings and works on paper in which vibrant colors and formal schematization transform traditional themes-- landscapes, portraits, still-lifes-- into uncanny compositions of peculiar intensity. He is especially known for his works in pastel-- a medium that lends itself to limitless color explorations-- which he uses not only on paper but also in vast mural compositions. The present watercolor, a dreamy tree landscape based on variations in yellow, exemplifies the artist's sensitive and musical approach to color, reminiscent of James MacNeill Whistler's subtle tonal harmonies.
