Notes:

DeFeo is best known for her monumental painting The Rose (1958-66), which she worked on single-mindedly for eight years. But she produced work in a wide range of media over the course of her career. This drawing is part of a series she created between 1975 and 1977 that took as its subject her camera tripod. She treated the tripod as if it were a figure, cloaking it in black paper or adorning it with eucalyptus leaves. She then photographed and drew it. The drawings in this series range from abstract to realistic and, in drawings such as this one, something in-between.
