Notes:
California-based artist Wayne Thiebaud achieved wide recognition in the early 1960s for his luscious paintings of cakes, candy counters, and ice cream cones. Drawing, however, has been central to his practice since he began his career as a commercial draftsman in the 1940s. Wedding Cake illustrates his characteristic subject matter and style, in particular his use of dramatic shadows and his sensitivity to the properties of pastel as a medium.
