Fight in the Streets of Orléans
ca. 1762
Black chalk on paper.
5 3/8 x 3 7/16 inches (137 x 87 mm)
Gift of John F. Fleming.

Notes:

Gravelot's design is preparatory for an engraved frontispiece to Chant XV of Voltaire's “La Pucelle d'Orléans” (Genève : Cramer,1762; facing p. 262). The drawing shows only the lower half of the finished composition, with a soldier driving back a crowd of people in the streets of Orléans and the houses above only faintly sketched in. See also 1968.15:28, 1968.15:35, and 1968.15:36 for additional preparatory drawings by Gravelot for the same publication.
