St. Louis Healing a Sick Man Kneeling at His Shrine
ca. 1760
Black chalk, on paper; incised with the stylus.
4 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches (114 x 184 mm)
Gift of John F. Fleming.
1963.13:6
Notes:

Gravelot's study is preparatory for a 1760 engraving by Noel Lemire that illustrates Jean de Joinville's "Histoire de Saint Louis" (Paris : 1761, p. 1761). A man kneels at the shrine of St. Louis, with the saint standing atop the shrine, extending his hand towards the supplicant; angels seated among clouds flank the scene at left and right, and two winged heads of cherubs are shown below. The Morgan preserves a second design by Gravelot, also engraved by Lemire, for this publication (Acc. No. 1963.13:5).
