Drawing for Fantasia

This drawing of five winged horses frolicking in a pond is an image from Walt Disney's "Fantasia". Today considered a classic, the film, containing no dialogue and consisting entirely of animation set to classical music, was viewed upon its release in 1940 as highly experimental. Celluloid drawings like this one were made for each shot, which were then photographed in succession on motion picture film to create the full-length feature. After the production of the film was completed, some of the celluloid figures were pasted on a watercolor and gouache background, as in the present work, and sold or given to museums and collectors.
