The sitters identified as Mr. and Mrs. Knap in Fairfax Murray, as Jonathan Richardson Sr. and Mrs. Knap in handlist of album. According to Carol Gibson-Wood ("Jonathan Richardson as a Draftsman," Master Drawings 32, no. 3 [1994], pp. 203-229]), Mrs. Catherine Knapp was a close female companion of Richardson's in the 1730s.
