A student of Ingres, Chasseriau adopted the characteristic style of his master's portrait drawings. In this graphite sketch, Chasseriau shows the wife of his close friend and fellow artist Charles Damour casually seated against the arm of a chair. At the lower right, Chasseriau dedicated the portrait to Damour. -- Exhibition Label, from "Life Lines: Portrait Drawings from Dürer to Picasso."

Inscription: 

Inscribed, signed, and dated at lower right, "A mon ami--/Ch--D'Amour/Th[re]Chasseriau/ 1852--".
