Notes:

Watermark: countermark, clock, with maker's name in a lozenge, I “heart” CVSSON (late 17th century French paper).
Both Pierre Rosenberg and Francois Marandet independently suggested a connection between the present sheet (formerly and unconvincingly given to Sebastien Bourdon) and the drawings of Sylvain Bonnet, dubbed in 1996 by Jean-Claude Boyer "the Master of the Oval" for his small format designs for painted miniatures. Two of these small drawings with scenes from the Story of Joseph were recently on the market in Paris [sale, Paris, Aguttes, 13 June 2017, lot 20].

Inscription:

Inscribed at lower left in an old hand in pen and brown ink, partially effaced, "C[or?]neille"; and on verso in a contemporary hand in pencil, "Bourdon".

Provenance:
Jak Katalan, New York.
Associated names:
