Inscribed on verso: in an old hand, at lower right, in pen and brown ink, partially cut off, "Adriaen van" [Ostade]; at lower left, in graphite, "2705"; at upper right center, in graphite, "Granville & / Fairfax Murray / col. etc."; at lower center, "9 [superscript] 7 (8?) [subscript bellow superscript] 36".
Watermark: Countermark: Letters "PB" (similar to Heawood, no. 430), letters between chain lines, with B touching chain at right.

Young; given by Mrs. Young in the 1930s to the donor.
