The drawing and an almost identical black chalk drawing by Naiwincx formerly owned by the late J.Q. van Regteren Altena are connected with the artist's etching of a "Rocky Landscape with a River", the third in a series of eight landscape prints.
Signed at lower left, in brown ink, "H: Naúwjncx Ft ["t" in superscript]". Inscribed on the verso, in graphite, at upper left corner, "A.E".; at center, "12"; at lower left corner, "210x/2"["210x" in superscript above "2"]; below this, "Esdaile"; further right, in a different hand, "T Th"; at extreme lower left edge, "Naúwijncx"; and at the lower right, in another hand, upside down, "d.x 2 By Van dyk. / fr 25 - Letter [or Petter?] / 28-o-".
