The drawing served as a study for van den Eeckhout's painting of the Adoration of the Magi of 1665 in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow.

Inscribed on the verso, at left side, in brown ink, four ruled vertical lines; label at lower left corner, with printed number, "228" (underlined in red); and numbered at lower right, in graphite, "30".
