Inscription: 

Signed and dated at upper right, in black chalk, "CPB(in ligature)erghem f. / 1654". Inscribed on the verso, at lower left corner, in black ink, "No. ["o" in superscript] 102". On the old mount, underneath the drawing, at lower right, in graphite, "8791 / h/-/-".
Watermark: Foolscap with five points, over "4" and three balls, fragment. No ball on 3rd and 4th collar points. (similar to Heawood, no. 1964), same as watermark on I,137

Provenance: 
Unidentified eighteenth-century collector (similar, but not identical to Lugt S. 2986b); Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), London and Florence; from whom purchased through Galerie Alexandre Imbert, Rome, in 1909 by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York (no mark; see Lugt 1509); his son, J. P. Morgan, Jr. (1867-1943), New York.
