Notes:

Watermark: none.
Unused design for pl. 3 of Daniel Defoe, "The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe of York, Mariner", London: John Stockdale, 1790.
The artist used a variant of this design for the actual plate in the 1790 edition of the Defoe classic. The present drawing was, however, apparently used as the frontispiece for an extra-illustrated copy of Anna Eliza Stothard Bray, Life of Thomas Stothard, R.A., with personal reminiscences, by Mrs. Bray..., London: J. Murray, 1851. (Mrs. Bray née Anna Eliza Kempe, was the widow of the artist's son, Charles Stothard.)

Inscription:

Signed in margin at lower right, in pen and brown ink, "T. Stothard R. A. del".

Provenance:
Black Sun Books, New York, 1976; Charles Ryskamp, Princeton.
