Reading the Object: Parchment in Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts

Thaw Conservation Center conservators present the history and material qualities of parchment as a substrate for text and illumination in manuscripts and books from Late Antiquity through the Medieval and Renaissance periods. How was parchment made, and what evidence of its manufacture can still be “read” today? The basics of parchment manufacture will be illustrated, including materials and methods used to create unusual colored parchments for luxury gospels and books of hours. Manuscripts and printed books from the Morgan’s renowned collections will form the basis for several interesting case studies.
