The drawings of Thomas Gainsborough (1727–1788) are known for their mastery of technique and their beauty.  Gainsborough drew in chalk, pastel, pencil and oil on paper.  His curious mind and experimental approach to making drawings was investigated by the Morgan's Senior Paper Conservator Reba F. Snyder in conjunction with a 2019 exhibition. She carefully studied the twenty-six Gainsborough drawings owned by the Morgan, and her research unearthed some of the secrets of Gainsborough's working techniques. Using both scientific analyses and close looking under varied light sources, she will discuss her approach to the drawings, and the results and interpretation of the analyses done.

Please note that the program will take place online. After registering, participants will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to participate using Zoom. We ask that you download the app in advance for the best user experience.
