Notes
Proof of a wood engraving by Swain of an unpublished illustration by Tenniel for Shakespeare's The tempest, probably created ca. 1878 for an abortive edition of Shakesepeare's works that was to have been illustrated by Tenniel and published by Bradbury and Evans.
Ray and others identify the Dalziel Brothers as the engraver; however, the Morgan Library copy of this illustration is signed in the block with the characteristic signature of the engraving firm of Joseph Swain.
