Two cards cut and trimmed into a ladder shape of seven steps, tied together on top with silk ribbons. They chart the progress of an anonymous young couple's relationship from Admiration to Solemnization, descending on the back from Possession to Separation.
The design appears to have been closely influenced by William Hone and George Cruikshank's original ladder 'toy' which was sold with the pamphlet, The Queen's Matrimonial Ladder.
