Notes
Plate 9 signed "J. Mérigot" and dated 1788. Usually attributed to J. Mérigot on that basis, although Barbier, Wiebenson and other sources assign the text to Louis Stanislas Cécile Xavier de Girardin (1762-1827), son of René Louis de Girardin (1735-1808). The attribution to Girardin is doubtful because he was only the sixteen years old at the time, and the author claims to have already traveled in England. It is possible that the publishers hired a journeyman writer to compose the text on the basis of information furnished by the Girardin family and the tour guides ("conducteurs"). The gardens were created by René Louis, marquis de Girardin.
"On prie les personnes qui désireront se procurer les dessins de différentes vues des Jardins d'Ermenonville, soit en grand, soit en petit, ou des Exemplaires coloriés de cet Ouvrage, de s'adresser à M. Merigot, Peintre & Graveur, rue basse du Rempart, no 13."--P. 4.
"Chanson du berger de la grotte verte"--[2] leaves of engraved music at end of text.
Library's copy has variant t.p. evidently produced for copies of the special issue(s), lacking the price, with a small vignette of a "ruin" flanked by two trees, and Mérigot père alone identified as bookseller in the imprint.
