The life of Cleomenes was translated from Plutarch by Thomas Creech, and owing to Dryden's illness, the fifth act of the play was completed by Thomas Southerne.

Dedicatory epistle to Laurence Hyde, 1st Earl of Rochester (1641-1711).
Owing to Dryden's illness, half of the last act was completed by his intimate friend, Thomas Southerne (See Saintsbuy. Dryden's dramatic works, VII, 209).
"To Mr. Dryden, on his Cleomenes," with the name Theophilus Parsons affixed, on a2 recto and verso.
