18th-century tan sprinkled calf, upper cover with shield stamped in gold with monogram L T H (possibly Lionel Tollemache Helmingham) with a crescent? At right, shield surpounted by the winged horse Tollemache crest and fret in base; lower cover with simple shield and Tollemache fret and crest. Endpapers have fleur-de-lis watermark very much like Heawood # 1713 (Dordrecht & Amsterdam 1724-1726) and # 1716 (England, ca. 1729).

Executed between 1440-1450, owned in the 15th century by Richard Preston (?); owned in 1566 by Edward Ochynham (inscriptions and signatures throughout the manuscript); believed to have been in the library of Lionel Tollemache (d. 1669), husband of Elizabeth, Countess of Dysart; owned by Tollemache family, preserved at Helmingham Hall, Suffolk, a seat of the Dysart-Tollemache family; examined by Alfred J. Horwood for the Historical Manuscripts Commission in 1870; purchased from A. Rosenthal by the Fellows with special assistance of the honorable Robert Woods Bliss, the honorable Douglas M. Moffat, Mrs. Melbert B. Cary, Jr., Mrs. Landon K. Thorne, Mr. and Mrs. Donald F. Hyde, and Messrs. Imrie de Vegh, Childs Frick, William S. Glazier, Arthur A. Houghton, Jr., C. Otto V. Kienbrusch, Hall Park McCullough, and Christian A. Zabriskie.
