Binding
Early 16th-century German (Donauwörth) blind-stamped pigskin over partially-bevelled wooden boards (46.5 x 32 cm), sewn on 5 supports. Plain paper pastedowns and endleaves; plain endbands. 2 clasps, missing. Stamps/rolls are unidentified (not in EBDB), but one is a round stamp with the Donauworth armorial (double-headed imperial eagle with sheild/W on chest), with a surrounding (illegible) inscription, which is quite similar to the 1548 Taler coin issued in Donauwörth.
Variant title
Buch der Croniken und Geschichten
Inscriptions/Markings
Hand decoration: Contemporary rubrication, alternating red and blue initials, red capital strokes, underlining, and L-brackets. Woodcuts are hand-colored. Annotations: Contemporary notations sporadically throughout in several hands, including additional references to register, reference to Vincent of Beauvais' Speculum historiale (leaf XLIr), and illegible notations on walls of Ulm (leaves CXCv-CXCIr, perhaps suggesting early owner from Ulm?).
Provenance
Philippus Rabus, signature, 15th/16th century (leaf LXXIXr); Johann Heinrich Joseph Niesert (1766-1841), inscription: "Bibliothecae J. Niesert, pastor in Velen 1817" (leaf [1]/1r, on mounting paper); E. Clark Stillman (1907-1995), shelfmark: SP47 (rear pastedown), bequeathed to: Pierpont Morgan Library, bequest of E.
