Binding
Early-16th century (ca. 1515-1520) blind-tooled Italian goatskin over pasteboards (21.5 x 14.5 cm.), sewn on 5 supports; rebacked. Blind-stamped on both covers with a portrait medallion of Julius Caesar. Modern plain paper pastedowns and endleaves; modern decorative endbands; gilt and guaffered edges (worn). 2 ties, missing.
Inscriptions/Markings
Hand decoration: Rubrication unrealized. Annotations: Contemporary marginal annotations throughout by a scholar in the circle of Pomponio Leto, including remarks on political events and an account of metrical clausulae. Inscription: "Martialis de Salustio. Hic erit ut perhibent doctor[um] corda viror[um]. Primus Romana Crispus in historia" (leaf a1v). 15 leaves bound in at end including "De nomine urb[e] ro[mae]" derived from the annotations in Vatican, Stamp.Ross.441; in same hand as marginal the notations in the text, likely missing 1 leaf of text between leaves 14-15.
