Original Modenese brown morocco over boards; gilt-tooled, 2 clasps; stamp of the Augustinian nunnery of San Gimignano near Modena; on upper cover, d'Este arms: in a circle a shield with a charge keys in saltire, surmounted by a tiara, the letters A or RF between shield and cirlce.

Provenance: 
Probably commissioned for San Gimignano during the rule of Alfonso II d'Este (his arms on the binding); no. 742 in a 19th century collection (paper label pasted inside upper cover); purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) from A Sambon in Mar. 1913; J.P. Morgan (1867-1943).
