Binding
15th-century blind-tooled German calf over beveled wooden boards (29 x 21 cm), sewn on 4 supports; rebacked. Based on two floral stamps EBDB s006134 and s005998, possibly bound in Nuremberg at the St. Aegidien workshop (Benediktinerkloster 1. Gruppe), active 1457-1503 (EBDB w000079/K20), but seems unlikely based on 17th-century provenance. Plain parchment pastedowns. 2 clasps, clasps wanting; gabel- and shield-shaped plates. Former chain attachment on rear board. 19th-century paper spine label.
Inscriptions/Markings
Hand decoration: Rubricated, red lombards, paragraph marks (C- and P-type), and capital strokes (rubrication same in all three works in PML 77823). Annotations: Manuscript quire signatures a-s and t-y, mostly trimmed. No marginal notations. Titles of volume contents on foredge.
Provenance
Gabriel of Fritzlar, inscription on reinforcement of leather knot tab: "Fr. Gabriel Frideslariensis An[n]o 1633 16 May;" shelf mark, unidentified: black ink stamped S surmounted by crown (bottom panel of spine); Walter Goldwater (1907-1985), bookplate (front pastedown); his sale, Swann Galleries, 1 Dec. 1983, lot 110; Pierpont Morgan Library, purchased from Swann Galleries, 1 Dec. 1983.
