Notes
Manzu was an Italian sculptor who upheld the classical tradition in modern sculpture. Largely self-taught, he began his career as a sculptor in the 1930s with a commission from the Catholic University of Milan. Although low relief sculptures and religious subjects comprise the majority of his oeuvre, Manzu also worked from the live model, creating sculpture in the round. The present drawing is a study from life of a male artist seated in a chair with his model seated on his lap.
