Notes
This pencil drawing by Delacroix joins twenty-seven other works and a sketchbook by the artist already in the collection, including a work after Rubens, an artist greatly admired by Delacroix. That drawing, after Rubens' Coup de Lance, is not copied by Delacroix, but rather is a work recalled and then drawn from memory. Executed with great freedom in ink and wash it is very different in character from the present work which is carefully rendered in pencil. It yet remains to identify the actual work Delacroix here studied.
