Notes
Tako Hajo Jelgersma trained with the marine painter Wigerus Vitringa (1657-1721) but worked primarily as a portraitist in Haarlem. This portrait, delicately executed in chalk on vellum, depicts a fellow Haarlem artist Izaak van der Vinne (1665-1740). In an interior space defined by shades of gray, the sitter appears with the implements of his trade, pausing from work to look directly at his portraitist. The firm countenance of the old man is rendered in predominantly red chalk and framed by the brim of his black hat and soft masses of white curly hair. Nearly twenty years later, this portrait was etched by one of Jelgersma's students, Cornelis van Noorde (1731-1795), a print of which is also in the collection (2007.98).
