Signed with the artist's monogram, and dated in lighter ink by another hand, "1517". Inscribed by J.C. Robinson on verso of old lining, in black ink at lower right, "Bought at Sale of Miss James' / Collection of drawings at Christie's June 23 1891 / for 101 guineas against Gutekunst / for the Berlin Museum. / JCRobinson".
