One of the most impressive drawings by Perino del Vaga, the recto of this large sheet features a vigorous sketch for a spandrel with Saint John the Evangelist. Both it and the ceiling design on the verso include Perino's typically mannered, elegant figures and probably relate to a commission from the 1540s, when he was arguably the leading painter active in Rome.
