Notes:

Severo da Ravenna is responsible for the invention of an oil lamp featuring Atlas supporting the heavenly globe (see Frick Collection, 1915.2.24 for a fine version from Severo's workshop). This popular bronze continued to be produced in variants from parts, and is thus known in multiple forms. The present iteration, assembled from parts, is not particularly distinguished by its craftsmanship.

Provenance:
Edward Mortimer Morris Warburg (1908-1992) and Mary Whelan Prue Warburg (1908-2009), New York.
