Notes
A novel, "Rough Passage to London" by Robin Lloyd based on Captain's Morgan's seafaring adventures and including references to his friendship with Dickens, was published in 2013 and includes, on the front cover, a reproduction of a lithograph owned by Philip and Annette Rulon titled "The New York Packet Ship 'Victoria' Entering New York Harbor" dated 1865 and inscribed to Captain E.E. Morgan.
Mrs. M. F. Armstrong (1844-1903), the author of "A Yankee Tar and his Friends" is the youngest daughter of Captain Morgan.

Summary
The collection consists of two autograph letters signed by Charles Dickens to Captain Elisha Ely Morgan. The first letter, dated 3 January 1861, identifies Morgan as the basis for the hero of "A Message from the Sea" and the second letter, dated 6 July 1863, concerns Dickens's appreciation of the American cigars that Morgan had sent to the author, the possibility of a reading tour of the United States and Dickens's remarks on the attitude of the British people towards the American Civil War. The collection also includes a reprint of Mary Frances Morgan Armstrong's essay "A Yankee Tar and his Friends" (MA 8724.3) and Morgan's passport (MA 8724.4).
