Published pp. 102-104, with two omissions: (1) she now has so much to do that she writes before breakfast; (2) she "never saw anything so kind as [the Ruskins] are." Mrs. Ruskin "overwhelms me with presents"--"a most massive gold chain" which she can't wear and will some day quietly return; a quantity of lace; a beautiful little cameo set; some presents for her birthday. She entreats John not to let her have so much, "but he says its [sic] all right and that his Mother wishes it." When she refuses, Mrs. Ruskin asks what she herself can do with them and says that she might as well have the pleasure of giving them now since in the end "they will all be yours..."; that Mr. Ruskin "is so proud of his daughter"; that she will "settle" John if he is not "as kind as kind can be." Will her mother send 1 1/4 yards of the enclosed ribbon, which Mrs. Ruskin admires very much?
