Summary
Reacting to the outbreak of world war: "it defies all description, it beggars all comment, I mean the horrible violence and shock of the change of consciousness that overtook us in a single night at the end of July--only 3 weeks ago--does; with the formidably, the terrifically altered world that we have been living in ever since, and that we are evidently to live in more and more. The sudden break with the past, the sudden unspeakable tension and earthshake, at once, of the present, are overwhelming, and we live along from day to day and hour to hour as in the face of an enormous series of interrogation points ?????? --the most formidable that could be thought of," and explaining how the events have affected him and his friends.
