Inscription:
Pencil note on verso: "When I bought this print, it, & its companion, 'Windsor Castle' were coloured in a very inartistic maner - apparently printed in colours, & Miss Kate Greenaway has been so kind as to complete the colouring & to neutralize as far as lay in her power the original brick dirty red on the face & neck." The note is signed "F. L." (Frederick Locker-Lampson) and dated "29 May 1884." NNPM

Acquired by 1884 by Frederick Locker-Lampson (1821-1895). Not listed in the 1886 catalogue of his collection (The Rowfant Library. London: Quaritch, 1886). Perhaps the impresion offered from the collection of "Mrs. L. Lampson" at Christie's, Jan. 13, 1903, lot 114 (not sold). Sold Christie's, Feb. 12, 1963, with "Windsor Castle." Acquired by Charles Ryskamp in May 1964 from Seven Gables Bookshop. NNPM
