Fragonard and the French Tradition celebrated the artist's brilliant accomplishments as a draftsman in the context of the prevailing currents of eighteenth-century French art.

In 2009 when the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon unveiled a previously unknown portrait painting with strong claims to be the only surviving life-time portrait of William Shakespeare, it created an international sensation.

Bringing together more than 160 works on paper by such iconic artists as Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington, and Joan Miró, this is the first major exhibition to explore the central role of drawing in surrealism, one of the most important movements in twentieth-century art.

The inaugural exhibition in a planned new series, the show's fourteen works highlight the innovative approaches employed by artists working in conditions that varied according to time of day, season, and weather conditions. The series will be drawn from the collection of oil sketches acquired by Morgan Trustee Eugene V. Thaw, who is also an honorary trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his wife, Clare.
