The inaugural exhibition in a planned new series, the show's fourteen works highlight the innovative approaches employed by artists working in conditions that varied according to time of day, season, and weather conditions. The series will be drawn from the collection of oil sketches acquired by Morgan Trustee Eugene V. Thaw, who is also an honorary trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his wife, Clare.

Over 120 extraordinary drawings from this superb collection of over two thousand European and American sheets were on view. The selection encompassed all drawing and watercolor media, including ink, chalk, charcoal, crayon, and graphite.

Studying Nature: Oil Sketches from the Thaw Collection presents more than twenty works drawn from the collection of Eugene V. and Clare Thaw, which chronicles the history of the genre in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Highlights from this season's selection include a mid-fifteenth-century English cooking scroll; autograph music manuscripts by Wagner, Verdi, and Britten; the first book printed in the English language; letters from Jane Austen and Albert Einstein; and photographer Edward Steichen's famous portrait of Pierpont Morgan.
