Title supplied by cataloger.
Unsigned and undated, with no place of writing identified.
Gilbert's comic opera The Mountebanks, with music by Alfred Cellier, was first performed on 4 January 1892 at the Lyric Theatre, London; the libretto first published in 1892 by Chappell, in London, and Novello, Ewer & Co. in New York.
Printed text in proof state, with the typography and layout distinctly different from that of the first edition of the libretto published in 1892.
Corrected proof of W.S. Gilbert's libretto for the opera, The Mountebanks, consisting of printed leaves which have been trimmed and mounted into a notebook, with corrections and annotations written throughout in the hand of the author on both the printed sheets and leaves of the notebook, and corrections and directions added by the printer in blue pencil. The volume is accompanied by a 9 page autograph manuscript containing indivdiual verses and songs, including manuscripts of the operas "Final Verses", "Song - Nita", "Ballad - Alfredo", "Recit - Ultrice", and a final page of verse identified at head as "Alternative Metre"; like the printed proof copy, the manuscript is corrected in the hand of the author, with corrections by the printer in blue pencil, probably indicating that the text was intended to be set from both the corrected proof and autograph manuscript.
