Wagner, in Mein Leben, relates that it was in Strassburg in January 1858, that, unknown to Hasselmans, he heard him conduct the overture to Tannhäuser before a French play (see Mein Leben, 570-71; My Life, 556-57).
Provenance:
A note accompanying the card, in the hand of Alfred Cortot, says that it was in Strassburg around 1848 that Wagner heard Hasselmans conduct parts of Der fliegende Holländer, and that the card was a gift of Mme Hasselmans to Cortot on 1 January [n.y.].
