Title:
Single Leaf from the Spanish Forger
Created:
France, probably Paris, ca. 1900
Description:
Single leaf : vellum, ill. ; 370 x 230 mm
Provenance:
Bonhams, New York (11 Dec. 2013, lot 1382); Caroline F. Schimmel; gift to the Morgan in 2014.
Notes:

Artist: The Spanish Forger.
The style of the miniature is closely related to a triptych (P21) in a New York private collection, for which see William Voelkle, assisted by Roger S. Wieck, The Spanish Forger (New York: 1978), p. 26, fig. 7. The present leaf is "L267" in Voelkle's ongoing catalog. Unlike most of the forger's work, the verso is blank, and seems not to be painted on reused vellum taken from choir books.
