Ms. leaf written and illuminated ca. 1570. Border outlined in gold, blue and red rules of interlaced flowering scrolls with animals and birds in two shades of gold.
This single leaf from a sixteenth-century copy of Firdawsī's Shāhnāmah is the earliest example of this important text in the collection. The subject of the miniature is quite rare; it is not included in the two late copies of this text in the Morgan (MSS M.540 and H.9).
