Notes
The son of a prosperous merchant, Flinck received his first training from the Mennonite preacher and painter Lambert Jacobsz, but he then moved to Amsterdam and worked alongside Rembrandt for a year, around 1635. Flinck's early works closely resemble Rembrandt's in style, and many--including the present sheet--have even been attributed to the master. Drawings by Flinck can generally be identified by his tendency to focus more on specific details as seen in the face of the present sheet, and by more uniform and regular hatching, as seen in the dramatic cast shadow behind St. Jerome.
