Notes
In Fools Rush in Where Angels Fear to Tread, Harry Gould Harvey IV weaves an intricate tapestry of images that reference a variety of theoretical, personal, and artistic sources. Drawing on the collaborative writings of Mary and Gregory Bateson, Duchampian chess theory, and the Tarot, Harvey constructs a metaphysical, cognitive map. The drawing centers the figure of the 'Fool' who, in the Tarot, represents the uninitiated individual embarking on a journey towards spiritual enlightenment. In Harvey's interpretation, the 'Fool' traverses the chessboard in a chariot, which is the seventh trump in the Tarot and which symbolizes forward progress. The drawing is enshrined in a handmade wooden frame crafted from salvaged trees and architectural materials and ornamented with silver embellishments much like a reliquary. Ultimately, the work invites viewers to reflect on the complex journey of self-discovery through realms of science, technology, and spirituality.
